Carolina Avian Research and Education – C.A.R.E. gives sanctuary to birds with special needs. Rare and endangered birds from around the world are studied here, and knowledge is shared with other avian facilities. C.A.R.E. is solely supported through plant sales and speaking fees.

Shearouse is also an internationally recognized plant hybridizer, and in 1998 was awarded the Banksian medal by the Royal Horticultural Society in London England for her work in ornamental horticulture. Shearouse holds several plant patents and continues to create superior varieties of water lilies, irises, daylilies, and canna lilies. Shearouse has taught horticultural classes for garden clubs, botanical gardens, and master gardeners for more than 25 years.
